Matched Betting In The UK
History
Matched Betting has been around in the UK from as early as the year 2000. The release of the Betfair Exchange made it extremely easy for people to hedge their free bets with the bookmakers and guarantee some profit in the process.
Whilst it’s been around that long, it was very much a secret to the masses and there was only a small community of people doing it across the country, most notably those on the Money Saving Expert forum.
It wasn’t until 2014 when Matched Betting became more main stream with the release of Profit Accumulator, by a man named Sam Stoffel.
Profit Accumulator, or PA for short, was a paid service aimed at helping people make money through Matched Betting. The website itself would walk people through step by step on how to make profit, even if you had never placed a bet before. This is what kick started the Matched Betting industry, and as of 2023 it is claimed that they alone have helped well over a hundred thousand UK residents.[1]
After the success of Profit Accumulator, various other Matched Betting Services cropped up, with Oddsmonkey being PA’s main competition.
More and more people started to take up Matched Betting as a side hustle and over time, the value of the offers started to decrease. That being said, to this day, you can still make some easy money through Matched Betting, especially by redeeming the Welcome Offers that most bookmakers continue to offer.
The Media
Matched Betting has been covered in the media many times, with plenty of reputable outlets writing articles on the subject.[2][3][4][5][6]. There’s also a lot of content posted by online influencers[7] who document their profits in order to help others.
Despite these articles, there is still a stigma around Matched Betting as it involves the use of betting websites – something which sounds like gambling on the face of it. This is very likely why you’ll only see articles posted online, as opposed to any real traction in the news.
The Law
Matched Betting is completely legal in the UK. The simple process involves placing one back bet on a bookmaker, and one lay bet on the exchange. There have been some concerns in the community around the use of multi accounting. This is a grey area, as it involves the use of somebody else’s account which, even with their permission, could be seen as fraudulent in the eyes of the bookmaker.
Matched Betting is also completely tax free in the UK. Earnings from Matched Betting are considered as gambling earnings, and so you won’t have to declare anything nor will you have to pay tax on anything you earn through the process.
How Much Money Can Be Made
The amount of money you can make from Matched Betting varies from person to person. It depends on how much time you have, and how much bankroll you have.
A typical person can expect to make anywhere from £500 to £1,000 if they successfully complete all of the Welcome Offers that are available in the UK. This amount changes regularly because bookmakers are constantly changing their promotions, however there will always be offers to entice new customers to play.
After completing the Welcome Offers, customers will be invited to complete Reload Offers. The amount of money that can be made from these is generally uncapped, as some of them have no maximum bet, whilst others do.
It is certainly possible to be making thousands of pounds a month from Matched Betting, however the majority of people may be making just a few hundred pounds from this side hustle.
How To Start
The best place to start Matched Betting is through one of the Matched Betting Services listed on this wiki. They will help you complete your first offer, step by step. Some of the services are completely free to use, and make their money from affiliate links.
